Bali Children Foundation

Our new Education in the Village project will support approximately 100 children’s education in one of the villages of Banjar district, Northern Bali. The first stage of the survey has been completed and to date 89 students have been introduced into the project. These are mostly junior and senior high school students. Once the administration for these students is finalized we will survey and include younger students into the program.

This is a much larger village than our existing project and based on the survey results will have some interesting challenges. The demographics are surprisingly different considering the distance between the villages is less than 5 km. Families in the new village are typically much larger and parents often older. A relatively high death rate amongst parents and siblings suggest a different health situation. Chronic unemployment amongst parents and siblings was noticeable in the survey results when compared to our first village. The new village is situated close to the main Singaraja-Gilimanuk Road and is a built-up area. The original village by comparison is totally agrarian. One typical family surveyed in the new village can be used to demonstrate the extreme difference between the localities. The family consisted of eight children and a mother. The father was dead. Two of the eight children were also dead. Two worked as handicraft makers, The remaining adult children (1 female and 2 males) did not work, the last and youngest male child had graduated from SMP (Junior High School) and applied to BCF for support to enter SMA (Senior High School). He is the first member of his family to graduate Junior High School. This profile contrasts with a typical family from the agrarian village. There a family is likely to be two live parents, not older than 35 years with father and mother both working the fields (someone else’s) along with their two or three children.

With this change in demographics and expansion in program size, we expect new challenges during the rest of this 2009 year of learning.

Alung Alung EITV Programme

A huge thank you to Stephanie Orr and friends who participated in the Corot EITV project earlier this year. Through there donation we were able to commence the EITV Project in Alung Alung, but additional funding is needed to continue this project. Stephanie also donated newly released books titled "Clean Bali" by Maggie Dunkle that focus on the environment especially problems caused by pollution and plastic waste.

We have 86 children in the project over 3 levels of schooling.

SD x 21 Primary

SMP x 39 Junior High

SMA x 26 Senior High

We have been fortunate over the last 6 months to cover there schooling costs as part of our commitment to the Banjar.

All donations towards schooling costs whether large or small are always needed and greatfully appreciated.

Indah is now in the process of training assistant teachers due to expanding numbers of students. Currently we are holding 3 classes per week of a 2 hour session. These are being held in the classrooms of the local school.

Due to the success of Indah’s curriculum at COROT we will follow the same programme at Alung Alung.

Agung, Marg and Vicki attended the 2nd EITV class recently and were overwhelmed by the exitement and positive attitude of students, and families from the village.
